Untitled

planetary alignment this weekend. Hold on tight

A Chinese artist who grafted the head of a human fetus onto the body of a bird has defended his work as art after a Swiss museum withdrew the piece from an exhibit. "It's precisely because I respect all life that I did this," artist Xiao Yu said Tuesday. He said the bird and fetus "died because there was something wrong with them. ... I thought putting them together like this was a way for them to have another life."
The controversial artwork named "Ruan," featuring a fetus head grafted onto the body of a bird, was created by Chinese avant-garde artist Xiao Yu. Swiss museum visitor Adrien de Riedmatten, 29, filed a complaint on Monday with the district attorney of Bern, Switzerland, calling for an investigation into the piece, which was on display at the Bern Art Museum. Xiao said he bought the head in 1999 for a few dollars from a man who was cleaning out a scientific exhibition hall. The glass bottle in which it came had a handwritten sticker identifying it as a female specimen from the 1960s. According to Xiao, it had no name or cause of death. He said he thought it was a miscarriage and not an aborted fetus, because it predated China's "one child" birth control policy -- launched in the late 1970s to limit most urban couples to one child in order to slow the growth of its population, which officially hit 1.3 billion this year. Rural couples and some in cities are allowed two children. The name of the piece, "Ruan," is a word Xiao invented that combines the Chinese characters for different kinds of animals. Xiao said he added the eyes of a rabbit to the head. Xiao is known for shocking material. He once paid an assistant $1,200 to sew pairs of living lab mice together at the hip and displayed them in glass bowls.

One time I fought love for seven years! –
and that was a beating, but I came out alright.
After that one
I thought it’d never be the same.
Like I had vanquished some rabid animal
with seven heads
that grew back seven times each,
and that was the fight of my life – over.
But, it turned out that the REAL love
is a seven headed animal that never gives up –
no matter how many times you kill it!
Until finally,
you have no choice
but to sleep with that beast,
to mate with it
and make it your own.
So you keep killing it,
and loving it,
over and over again
and only getting deeper inside
until you’re right where you always wanted to be.

Twisty Mick

If I could twist up like Mick Jagger
I bet I’d get all of the girls!
Lester Bangs was wrong,
there’re just some moves that transcend everything.

Green-line losers

Saturday night I caught a subway car full of drunk and lonely men.
Every seat was occupied
by a loser.
Defeated and sizing up the other losers,
hoping to collectively learn from each others failure.
Their eyes red and sore from too much hopeful-gawking,
dissecting each others choice of scent, clothing and swagger,
wondering how it all went wrong?
Meanwhile on the surface, in the streets, the women of Montreal run free.
Wild, and feeding – gorging on the endless stream of losers,
sending their defeated corpses below to ride home together on the green line.

Behemoth

That particular stretch of highway,
rolls over,
exposing its belly
for a jackhammer-caesarean,
tearing up root and structure
and rebar.

An architect’s vision of speed,
in a succession of motorists -
once loved, once agonized over,
now split open and crumbling.
Tired and falling down to rest with the bums.

Another Elliot Smith

#2 in my brief Elliot Smith series. This one's called "Needle in the Hay" and it's also from an image by Wendy Lynch. Don't know who she is, but she's a great photographer. Note the Gaugin painting in the background. Love it.

Forgot what a musical genius this guy was. This is me photo-shopping an image by some lass named Wendy Lynch. If you don't know Elliot Smith, check him out. A brilliant, tragic life involving musical genius and savage drug addiction.

Remember this one?

More Pat Robertson

So, in the continuing "I am embarassed to be associated with all things having to do with Christianity, Western culture, and North America" files...

Pat Robertson backed off on his comments about assasinating Venezuelan presidente Hugo Chavez, saying he was "misunderstood". (As one newspaper writer pointed out, misundersood only by people who didn't speak English, perhaps.) And then, the next day, after Donald Rumsfeld called Robertson's comments "illegal" (how's THAT for irony???), Robertson retracted them entirely.

Still no retraction of the "feminism encourages women to eat their babies" comment, though.

The Mural is Done

The first of several details of our brand new finished graffiti mural, done by Winnipeg's top young graffit boyz... Pat Lazo, Mike Johnson, Brad something or other (can't remember his name, but he rocks), and a few others.

These lads, and some of the 26'ers and others are in Graffiti Gallery's 7th anniversary show right now. I went to the opening b/c Steve told me there would be a Jose Cuervo tequila dancing girls team giving out free shots all night. Boy, was I ever disappointed...

Next, we do the front of the building-- Dan is in the process of working on some grants. When you ALfA out-of-towners come back, you'll hardly recognize the place.

this says: BLXZZTNNN, yo!

note the cool subway train effect w/ the windows, the top of the cars, the city visible over the top, etc. wicked stuff...

this, of course, is the back wall. next to it is the polite, tasteful decor of stella's bridal galleria. i think Pat Lazo did most of this wall.

The Bank of Montreal

Just when you thought you'd heard it all...

hi everyone... sorry about the long post, but you gotta read this. Just when you thought you'd heard the craziest right-wing nut of all time, Pat Robertson steps up to take their place.

This is from yahoo.ca

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson suggested on-air that American operatives assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to stop his country from becoming "a launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism."

"We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability," Robertson said Monday on the Christian Broadcast Network's "The 700 Club."
"We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator," he continued. "It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with."
Chavez has emerged as one of the most outspoken critics of President Bush, accusing the United States of conspiring to topple his government and possibly backing plots to assassinate him. U.S. officials have called the accusations ridiculous.
"You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it," Robertson said. "It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... and I don't think any oil shipments will stop."
Robertson, 75, founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a former presidential candidate, accused the United States of failing to act when Chavez was briefly overthrown in 2002.
Electronic pages and a message to a Robertson spokeswoman were not immediately returned Monday evening.
Venezuela is the fifth largest oil exporter and a major supplier of oil to the United States. The
estimates that U.S. markets absorb almost 59 percent of Venezuela's total exports.
Venezuela's government has demanded in the past that the United States crack down on Cuban and Venezuelan "terrorists" in Florida who they say are conspiring against Chavez.
Robertson has made controversial statements in the past. In October 2003, he suggested that the State Department be blown up with a nuclear device. He has also said that feminism encourages women to "kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians."
